Nov. 17, 2005: ACM/IEEE Supercomputing 2005 recognized our research demonstration "Wide Screen Window on the World: Life Size HD Videoconferencing" with the "Most Innovative Use of New Technology" award. "McGill used high bandwidth to reduce latency on their high definition video conferencing between Seattle and Montreal, so that two way synchronized interaction of musicians was truly possible." For more info, see Current Activities.

Welcome

The Group is located at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Most of its projects are based in the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT) of the Faculty of Music.

Its main focus is continuing development of the McGill Ultra-Videoconferencing System for high-bandwidth, high-quality, and low-latency videoconference interaction, such as that required for high fidelity instruction and distributed musical performance. The overall objective is to create the feeling of “being there” wherever “there” may be.

The Group has had a number of funded research projects underway since early 2000. Past and current projects are listed on the left.

The permanent members of the Group are:
Jeremy Cooperstock, Centre for Intelligent Machines, Faculty of Engineering
John Roston, Instructional Multimedia Services
Wieslaw Woszczyk, Faculty of Music
Stephen Spackman, Chief Software Architect

Additional researchers from both McGill and other institutions play key roles in individual projects and are listed under the projects in which they participate.

The Group has made their software available free for broad public use while restricting resale and incorporation in commercial products. (Free Download)
